May Week

May Week is an annual, culturally enriched program that is free to the community during the month of May.

Past May Week Highlighted Events:

​

• Our 2023, May Week occurred during May 8 - May 12, 2023, at Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Justice. The theme was Homecoming: Educated, Accomplished, and Triumphant; which resonated throughout the week's activities. The week culminated with our Prom Dress Giveaway: Say Yes To The Dress. 

 

• Our 2012, May Week Celebration, co-sponsored by the Arts and Letters Committee highlighted classical dancer Misty Copeland at the Dwyer Center. On June 30, 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in American Ballet Theatre's 75-year history. The title theme, "My Body Curves," explored positive body images in the arts.

 

• In 2007, the May Week event, co-sponsored by the Arts and Letters Committee featured the Harlem Horizon Art Studio art and performers from the Harlem Hospital Dance Leadership Program. The event was held in the Harlem Hospital Auditorium.  

 

• In 2006, the May Week event theme co-sponsored by the Arts and Letters Committee  was "A Celebration of Legends: Remembering Legendary Who Passed Away from 2003-2006." The event was held at the Wadleigh Secondary School of Performing Arts and featured wonderful performances by current and former Wadleigh students paying tributes to artists such as Octavia Butler, Ray Charles, Ossie Davis, Rick James, Fayard Nicholas, Lou Rawls, Gordan Parks, Wilson Pickett, Richard Pryor, Nina Simone, Edwin Starr, Luther Vandross, Barry White, August Wilson, and Ronald Winans who are "gone but not forgotten."
